Benefits of school gardening

School gardens are very essential in educational systems. Studies show that school gardening enhances students’ lives and has been shown to help students develop a sense of ownership and responsibility. It promotes a high quality of learning and integrates 21st century skills into core curriculum and state standards. Research suggests that grade level students participating in gardening enrichment at their schools scored significantly higher on science achievement tests compared to students who did not participate in garden enrichment activities. 

Through gardening, students are allowed to explore nature while asking and answering questions about horticulture. Students will have the opportunity to nurture living systems and improve social skills as they work in groups to maintain their school’s garden. After participating in garden enrichments, students will have an increased knowledge of nutrition, plant ecology, ecosystems.
