Apartment/Container Gardening

Do you live in an apartment? Well you can still #GrowYourOwnFood. As long as you have a patio or a small space outside of your door you can grow most vegetables and herbs in pots. My journey into gardening began on an apartment balcony. I didn’t have much space and honestly I didn’t know how much space I really needed but I still began. I made some mistakes like planting too many seeds in one pot but mistakes are what helps you learn what NOT to do next time.

Fast forward when I had access to a patio I had a little more ground space that I could use so I stacked milk crates to create a platform (there were a few neighborhood cats that would jump in the pots that were on the ground.) and grew more vegetables in pots like tomatoes, corn, kale, and more!

You can grow almost anything in a pot…assuming you choose the right size pot.

Pot size recommendations

10in=small herbs, strawberry, romaine lettuce

14in=herbs, leafy greens (2-4 per pot)

18in=broccoli/cauliflower, eggplant, all greens in multiple, peppers, determinant tomatoes

24in=squash, indeterminate tomatoes, cucumber, combination of veggies/herbs

Most fruiting veggies need 6-8 hours of sun and most greens and herbs can handle a little less sunlight. Sometimes overwatering causes more damage than underwatering so check soil moisture before watering. The most important thing is to “Learn as you grow”  Dont be afraid to make mistakes on your journey! Lets get growing!
